LOCATION & MAP
Gythio is a historic town and port located in the southern Peloponnese. It is built amphitheatrically at the hill Larysio and is the main port of the Laconian Gulf. The southern edge of the city of Gythio is connected with a small island, Kranai or Marathonisi, where the Tzannetaki tower, the octagonal lighthouse of the same name (Kranai lighthouse) and the small church of Agios Petros are located.
According to Pausanias, Paris spent his first night in Kranai with the “Beautiful Helen” after her abduction. He presents as an etymology of the name the belief of the ancient inhabitants that it meant "Land of the gods".
According to ancient legend, Gythio was founded by Hercules and Apollo, when during the construction of the city they came into conflict due to the magic tripod of the Oracle of Delphi. It was the port of ancient Sparta, which is located 40 kilometres north.
